SOME HERO STORIES

THE STORY OF GEOFFREY

I created an efficient test automation solution for the news site of the VRT .

I met The Test Leaders on a VDAB Job day. I just started my Bachelor, and I had the drive and ambition to start as Test Engineer in parallel. Combining practice and theory was what I was looking for. The Test Leaders gave me this opportunity.

After a thorough internal and external training period, my knowledge and skills were raised to a higher level. At the same time the opportunity presented to start at the VRT as agile test automation engineer. My responsibility was to develop a functional test framework for the content management system of the VRT news site, a website viewed by thousands of visitors per day.

At the start, there was no clear test approach, only a POC with just a few tests. After extending the test set, it became clear that a lot of time was lost due to slow and flaky tests. I investigated several options and consulted senior team members in order to propose a number of improvements and innovations. I also ensured that new tests could be performed in a shorter time frame.

Thanks to the effort of the team, we managed to solve most of the problems. Afterwards I secured the future proofing. Through refactoring I made it possible to re-use the test framework for future projects without the need for many adjustments. This allows the developers to focus on the delivery of features. The refinement of the framework is a continuous process. The speed by which changes can be made to the website improves continuously.

As a "rookie", I was able to set up a good test platform that runs very stable as we speak. For this achievement I am highly valued by my colleagues and the customer.”

THE STORY OF DAVID

I integrated and optimized the operational test flow and empowered cross departmental collaboration

I work as an infrastructure test lead at one of our large international customers.

That customer wanted to implement a new Windows operating system. Different tasks had to be executed by different people. There was no strong collaboration between the involved teams. It was a challenge for all impacted parties, the various IT departments, IT management, engineering and application development to get aligned. Due to technical and business related responsibilities all parties were following their own planning.

In my role, I had to reconsider the full integration aspect. It was my responsibility to capture the requirements and identify all functional and non-functional risks. The new catalogue had to be validated so the migration of all applications could happen without issues.

By reformulating the challenges and showing how best practices could create value, I was able to connect the involved people and implement the different solutions. I enforced a strong collaboration and used my own network whenever we needed specific technical expertise. The test flow that I created is still being used and continuously improved. Today even other projects where The Test Leaders is not involved, have adopted our methodology.

By fully going for my vision I made a long-lasting difference.”
